| The Yavneh Ensemble... The Yavneh Ensemble is a mixed chorus consisting of professional and experienced amateur singers which performs Jewish and Judaic-based choral music under the leadership of Artistic Director Robert A.M. Ross. The Ensemble is the newest member of the Philadelphia Festival Chorus, a twenty-seven old organization which includes under its aegis the professional vocal ensemble Voces Novae et Antiquae. | The story of Yavneh... When the destruction of the Second Temple appeared to be inevitable, Yohanan ben Zakkai laid plans for the continuity of Jewish worship. After his students spirited him out of Jerusalem, he sought and received permission from Emperor Vespasian to establish a school in the city of Yavneh. It was at Yavneh that the prayer services which replaced the sacrificial system were conceived. In our day, the Yavneh Ensemble seeks to play a part in insuring the continuity of Jewish choral music and culture through performance, documentation and education. |

| The Yavneh Ensemble’s Mission... The Yavneh Ensemble is a choral group comprised of professional and highly qualified amateur singers, dedicated to the performance, research, and documentation of historically significant Jewish choral music, as well as newer Jewish choral works of interest. In addition to presenting this music to the public, Yavneh seeks to support and strengthen local volunteer synagogue choirs and independent Jewish choirs through collaborative performances, workshops, and other educational activities. While a primarily Jewish ensemble, Yavneh strives for inclusivity and diversity in its ranks, welcoming all qualified individuals who love and wish to support Jewish choral music. |
